Online Therapy: Why Taking a Not Knowing Position Rings Hollow
9:00-12:00 p.m., Saturday, November 9, 2019
Richard P. Long, Ph.D., LMFT, Presenter
“Nothing is permanent but change,” said the Greek philosopher Heraclitus fifty-eight hundred years ago. If that is true, then we as therapists have a responsibility to consider what it means to provide clients an alternative to in-person therapy—delivery via telehealth, or telemental health or online therapy. With the publication of 2017 Report of the Online Therapy Workgroup, MFT’s can no longer take a not knowing position when it comes to delivering therapy online. This presentation will provide participants with an overview of ethical and regulatory issues, training programs, clinical issues and selected best practice guidelines for the delivery of therapy using telehealth. PowerPoint slides, open discussion and small group work during the presentation. Participants are asked to bring a fully charged smartphone with them to the presentation.
Richard Long is the current chair of AAMFT’s Telehealth and Technology Interest Group. He is also chair for a workgroup charged with the creation of minimum standards for systemic family therapy applications. His interest in telehealth began when he developed “game changing” telehealth rules for Georgia’s Composite Board. He is a Board Certified-Telemental Health Provider. He has presented professional workshops for conference attendees at the American Counseling Association, American Association of Marriage and Family Therapy and the International Association of Marriage and Family Therapy. He lives in Naples, Florida with his husband Edward and his dog, Max.
